Not allowed to meet CM Badal, farm labourers on warpath again

A six-member delegation of the Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union today returned empty-handed from Chandigarh as they were allegedly not allowed to meet Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. They have decided to burn effigies of the Chief Minister across the state and gherao the Badals during their public appearances.

Activists of the union had lodged a three-day protest in Lambi, from September 15-17, and the Muktsar district administration had fixed th
eir meeting with Badal for today at 10 am at Punjab Bhawan in Chandigarh.
However, they kept waiting till about 5.30 pm but were not called inside.

Lachman Singh Sewewala, general secretary of the Union, said “The officers did not allow us to meet him. The Muktsar Deputy Commissioner, through the Lambi tehsildar, appealed to us to wait till evening. However, the meeting did not take place.”

The farm labourers are demanding five-marla plots assured by the state government for homeless people, benefits of blue card for those left uncovered, compensation of last year’s failed cotton crop, permanent employment and immediate compensation to those who committed suicide due to debt.
