Facing a financial crisis, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has decided to increase the paid parking areas in the city. Sources said the proposal to convert around 30 free lots into paid parking had been prepared and would be placed before a meeting of the MC House on May 30.
The additional paid parking lots will be part of the 55 paid parking lots for which the civic body plans to float tenders after getting the terms and conditions approved by the House.
The new paid parking areas have been identified in Sector 7, 19, 22, 23, 24 and 36.
The MC has been running the 25 paid parking lots and the multi-level parking on old rates after it terminated the agreement with M/s Arya Toll Infra Ltd, which failed to pay the licence fee of Rs 3.69 crore.
M/s Arya Toll Infra Ltd was charging for the 25 paid parking lots on an hourly basis, which had evoked a strong reaction from people, who opposed the high rates in the absence of smart parking facilities. The company was allotted the contract for Rs 15 crore.
The sources said the MC would allot these parking lots to different contractors after dividing these into three or four zones to end monopoly of one company. An MC official said looking at the civic body’s poor financial condition, the MC had no option but to create more parking lots to generate revenue.
