Punjab Congress ready for Assembly Poll

Before the mega rally of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi in October, the party is all set to kick off its campaign on wheels. The party is busy giving final touches to 13 specially designed minibuses called “Punjab Congress Express” for holding “nukkad” meetings across the state over 37 days. Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh will flag the first one off on September 24 from Chandigarh.

Each of the 13 parliamentary constituencies will get one publicity “rath” — a customised Force Tempo Traveller costing around `7 lakh. It will run as per the route mapped by the party and a back office being set up in Congress war room will track exact movement of each vehicle.

Senior leaders will be heading the campaign — “Congress Liyao, Punjab Bachao” — in each parliamentary constituency. Manpreet Badal will lead the campaign in Bathinda, Sunil Jakhar in Ferozepur and Congress Legislature Party leader Charanjit Singh Channi in Anandpur Sahib.
An extensive network of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) officials and poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s I-PAC team and volunteers would be troubleshooting real time to ensure that movement of the “Punjab Congress Express” is fluid and free of any obstacles. Amarinder will continue to cover remaining assembly segments under his “Halke Vich Captain” programme. “The bus campaign will be a force multiplier to the Halke Vich Captain campaign and take the message of the Congress across the state. The routes and meetings points for all the constituencies have been strategically designed to reach maximum people, from all walks of life and various communities. Each point for meeting has been identified through social listening exercises carried out by the I-PAC team and the local Congress unit. The demand for these meetings at particular points and the choice of leaders addressing gatherings have come from the public,” I-PAC said in a statement.
In Ferozepur, Jakhar will be accompanied by Indian Youth Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and former MLAs Hans Raj Josan and Inderjit Singh Zira. Each constituency will have an in-charge for organising meetings at the local level.

Manpreet said the Congress bus campaign will highlight how Badal’s “misrule has eaten up Punjab like cancer”. “The youth have no jobs, farmers are committing suicides, crimes and atrocities against women and Dalits have risen and teachers are on the streets,” he added. Jakhar said the campaign would also give a message of unity to party’s rank and file through “nukkad” and small meetings.
